IoT in Marketing

IoT (Internet of Things) is a vast network of objects that can connect to the internet independently. These objects continually transmit data which reveal useful insights. IoT has proved revolutionary for sectors such as transportation and manufacturing, with several impacts for marketing as well. Briefly, IoT comprises the following elements:

  • Edge devices: A user device which is connected to the core enterprise network
  • Network: These are wide coverage, high-speed networks which offer uninterrupted connectivity
  • Mainframe: This is where the data processing takes place; this can be the cloud, in-house servers, or even a portable device at a kiosk
  • Sensors & RFID tags: These are embedded on “things” which can range from clothes to machine equipment and everything in-between
