WhatsApp has released new updates that extend the limit of users in a group to 256. The update has been released only for Android and iOS platforms as of now, but it is expected that the upgraded versions will soon be released for Windows Phones and other mobile operating systems as well. WhatsApp had initially launched their group chat feature with a 50-user limit only. This was extended to 100 in 2014.
According to a release, the update is available on version 2.12.236 for Android and version 2.12.437 for iOS, and can be downloaded from the company website. The instant messaging app first notifies users about the update when they visit the chat section. Users can create groups the same way as before, with the difference being that they can add up to 256 people to each group now.
WhatsApp, which recently crossed 1 billion active user mark, has 1 billion groups and serves 42 billion messages a day. The extension of group chat limits will especially benefit brands and marketers who need to reach out to a large number of people all at once. Besides, large organizations will also be able to ensure wider information-sharing and greater collaboration between their employees and partners.
